Medical Administrative Specialist

This program provides professional development to those who will seek entry level employment as a Medical Administrative Specialist.

The Medical Administrative Specialist is employed in doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. The graduate is qualified to contribute specialized knowledge toward medical secretarial and medical receptionist roles and/or medical transcription, medical insurance reporting, coding and billing. Duties may extend to obtaining medical histories, handling phone and record keeping plus contributing to medical office care.

WHAT IS A MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST? What is a medical assistant?

MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST
This career may put you in the center of contact — in the medical office where your new skill sets will go to work supporting administrative needs, patient reception, systems of office organization, information sharing and many varied tasks.

The Medical Assistant performs both administrative and clinical duties, usually under the supervision of a physician. Administrative duties may include: maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, answering telephones, handle billing, order supplies and update patient records. Clinical duties may include collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, sterilize medical instruments, taking medical histories, recording vital signs, drawing blood, and preparing patients for examination. 

PROGRAM CONTENT

This program is built on essential knowledge pathways that include lecture and computerized application plus a supervised externship experience.

In total, there are 21 courses of study 59 credits delivered in 892 hours of rigorous study and practice that contribute to graduation. Class size is limited to 24 students. Normal completion time for day students is 11 months. Evening students plan to complete study in approximately 18 months.

When can I begin school?
Most programs start every six weeks. Get a fast start, so you’re ready to head for the job market with minimum delay. Rewards count when you can finish your day program in about a year.

Are evening classes available?
Yes, the school offers both day and evening classes to accommodate the busiest of lives

How long will it take me to complete the program?
The normal completion of this program is 13 months for day students and 21 months for evening students.

How big are the classes?
Class size varies depending on the type of class being taught; but, usually limited to 16 students in laboratory environments and 24 students in lecture settings.

What does it cost?
There’s good news! Federal sponsored grant programs and varied loan programs are available for qualified students. A professional staff will help you gain access to a plan for preparing your time and budget. The goal … to make your education affordable.

What about accreditation?
The School is accredited by ACICS, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools. This is an organization authorized by the US Department of Education to monitor the content and performance of schools nationwide.

What test or certification do I need?
While there is no industry specific employment requirement for certification, the school recommends that you seek certification and will even assist you in pursing certification upon graduation.

How do I know if becoming a Medical Administrative Specialist is right for me?
